Modern Quilting Style

So, I am learning that in quilting there are two different styles, modern and traditional. I think as I start my quilting journey that my style is more modern. So, what is modern quilting? While according to the Modern Quilting Guild:
"Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting."

I am attracted to the bold colors of the modern quilts and the "pattern-less" designs. I wanted to learn more about making modern quilts, so I bought some books and I took a class on modern improvisational techniques by Joe Cunningham (Joe the Quilter) on Craftsy.

Here are are some sneak peeks of the quilt tops that I made using the techniques from his class.

I had fun trying out these techniques. I like the freedom that these modern improvisational quilts give you to use pattern mixing, to use all your scraps, and to use your intuition to make the quilts. I look forward to learning more about Modern Quilting and making more modern quilts. I also look forward to finishing these quilts soon! Keep your eye out for my finished projects.
