About Me

Sonya Luna     I am Midwest Latina that lives in and grew up in Southeastern Michigan. I have a Mexican and Polish background. Ever sense I was little I have enjoyed learning about different cultures and creating art. I loved going to the local Scrap Reuse store and filling up a bag of treasures and going home and making fun crafts. I also loved planning themed birthday parties for myself, such as, Bear Birthday Party, Troll Birthday Party, and Detective Birthday Party. I loved solving puzzles and playing board games like Clue. I also made my own board games. Creative class projects where my favorite.

I enjoyed spending time with my extended family. I loved going to my grandparents house. I had a suitcase that said, "Going to Grandma's House." In college, I had the opportunity to learn more about my Mexican culture. I had the opportunity to study aboard in Oaxaca, Mexico. Before the trip, there was an orientation that taught us about the Cultural Iceberg Theory, which has stuck with me ever since, and I have used that theory in my work, in my personal journey, and in my creative process.

My husband and I were ahead of the trend. We went through the Fiancé Visa process for him to come to the United States of America from Mexico and for us to get married in 90 days. We got married and have been married for 17 years. We have one son. When our son was little, I learned how to quilt at a local United Methodist Church and I got hooked. Now, textile art is one of my creative expressions.

I worked for the United Methodist Church in Michigan for 15 years as the Coordinator of Hispanic/Latino Ministries. I worked for the Michigan Conference in developing new ministries, in supporting existing ministries, and in working with leaders. I was also the program manager for several programs, one program being the Hispanic Youth Leadership Academy. I managed grants, budgets, and did fundraising. In that time, I cofounded a nonprofit organization that is now called Immigration Law & Justice- Michigan. It provides free immigration legal services. During that time, I also received a Graduate Certified for Nonprofit Management from Eastern Michigan University.

I received a minor in Art at Kalamazoo College and have practiced various art forms since then. My current art forms that I am exploring are textile/fiber arts, mainly quilting and embroidery. I also enjoy collaging, altering books, mixed media, acrylic painting, and printing making. I have taught art classes to children, youth, and adults.

Over the last two years I was trained to become a coach and I have 50 hours of coaching experience. I would like to continue to coach artists and creatives to support them in their art dreams.

I enjoy facilitating workshops, teaching art classes, consulting, and coaching. Please see the offering pages to see what I can offer you and your organization.
