Family First

My latest quilt I made was for a second cousin. It was in memory of her mother, Dora, who passed away earlier this year. Yesterday, it was our family reunion and I gave it to my second cousin there. The quilt turned out well. I used a combination of green fabrics and a white center fabric because Dora was a Michigan State University fan and their colors are green and white.

The white center piece was actually a fabric that I designed and made with Spoonflower.com. If you have ever want to make your own fabrics, I recommend using Spoonflower.com. There are tutorials on the site that show you how to make your own fabric.  On the fabric I made, the words that I used were Family First because that it what was one of the last texts that Dora sent out.

The pattern and guide I used for making the quilt was from one of my first quilt books, Quit As-You-Go Made Modern by Jera Brandvig. Brandvig is going to be having another book coming out soon. The fabric I picked out for the backing was the same fabric I used for the binding, which was a cream color with some sparkle in it because Dora was always smiling. I used a label that I also made on Spoonflower.com to finish the quilt.
There are also tutorials on Spoonflower.com and templates for making your labels.

This is my second project that I have made in memory of someone. I think quilts are a special gift to give to a someone who has lost a loved one, especially when you can incorporate something into the quilt about the person that has passed away. It is a good keepsake to have.
